Pantocrator

16” x 20”” Oil and gold on wood panel
by Joshua Adam Risner

  • This powerful icon of Christ Pantocrator (Christ the All-Powerful) presents a modern, painterly interpretation of one of the most ancient images in Christian art. Christ is depicted in a traditional frontal pose, his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing while his left holds a heavily ornamented, golden Gospel book adorned with a prominent cross. He is framed by a large, radiant gold halo featuring a subtle cruciform pattern, set against a textured, ethereal background of muted blues and ochre. The artist employs a rich, tactile technique, with visible brushstrokes and layered pigments that give the figure a grounded, human warmth while maintaining his divine solemnity. Encased in a broad, gilded frame that feels like an extension of the sacred light within the painting, the work balances the rigid geometry of classical iconography with a soft, soulful realism in Christ’s expression, inviting a direct and personal encounter with the viewer.
