This evocative icon of the Virgin Mary centers on the theme of the "Seven Sorrows," portrayed through a striking blend of traditional symbolism and expressive, modern brushwork. Set against a weathered, sky-blue background, Mary is shown with a single tear and a gaze of quiet lamentation, her head framed by a wide, matte gold halo. Unlike traditional depictions where the swords are literal, here they manifest as seven golden, stylized rays or blades that erupt from a central point of glowing white light at her chest, symbolizing the piercing of her soul as prophesied by Simeon. She is draped in a rich, terracotta-red mantle featuring white-striped borders and geometric accents, which contrasts with the cooler blue of her undergarment. The artist’s use of visible, textured layers and a warm, earthy palette gives the sacred subject an intimate, tactile quality, emphasizing the radiance of her endurance amidst sorrow.
